June 2010 commercial printing shipments were $7.2 billion, up +2.4% compared to 2009. Adjusting for inflation, shipments were up +1.3%. “This is the first three month gain in shipments on an inflation-adjusted basis since the period of October 2006 through April 2007,” explained Dr. Joe Webb, director of WhatTheyThink's Economics and Research Center.
The second quarter was up $590 million, or +2.8%, compared to the second quarter of last year. Dr. Webb said that “We are showing some signs of stabilization, and we have increased our forecast for 2010 from $82 billion to $85 billion. Our forecasting models for 2016 are showing vastly diverging scenarios, but it's nice to have some breathing room here. We are still in transition, but it appears that print businesses are doing better because their weaker competitors are no longer in the market.” Dr. Webb also advised that the media markets are still in flux, and he advised caution. “The holiday retail season will still have emphasis on new media, and print business owners must increase their efforts to include those media, and management of them, into their product mix.”
